The Anatomy of a Great Midjourney Prompt

Midjourney prompts have a reliable structure that consistently produces better results: [Subject] + [Medium/Style] + [Lighting] + [Composition] + [Mood/Atmosphere] + [Technical parameters]

Example: "Portrait of a woman in her 40s, oil painting, Rembrandt lighting, close-up, contemplative mood, rich dark background --ar 4:5 --v 6"

Prompt Building Blocks

Subject Description

Be specific. "A dog" generates mediocre results. "A golden retriever puppy sitting in a field of wildflowers, soft sunlight, shallow depth of field" generates something usable.

Good subject descriptors: age, emotion, clothing, pose, setting, time of day, season, scale.

Art Style and Medium

Adding a style or medium transforms generic images into something with character:

  • Photography: film photography, Fujifilm Superia 400, 35mm lens, bokeh
  • Painting: oil painting, impressionist style, loose brushwork, Monet
  • Digital art: concept art, artstation, digital illustration, clean lines
  • Cinematic: cinematic photography, movie still, anamorphic lens, film grain

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most powerful levers in Midjourney prompts:

  • golden hour, sunset, warm backlighting — warm, cinematic
  • Rembrandt lighting, dramatic shadows — portrait photography
  • neon, cyberpunk lighting, reflections — urban, sci-fi
  • soft diffused light, overcast sky — natural, calm
  • studio lighting, clean white background — product photography

Composition

  • close-up portrait, extreme close-up, macro
  • wide angle, aerial view, bird's eye
  • rule of thirds, centered composition, symmetrical

Essential Midjourney Parameters

ParameterUsageExample
--arAspect ratio--ar 16:9 (widescreen), --ar 1:1 (square)
--v 6Model version (use latest)--v 6.1
--style rawLess artistic interpretationBetter for photorealism
--noExclude elements--no text, watermarks
--q 2Quality levelHigher quality, more GPU time
--chaosVariation level (0-100)--chaos 20 for variety

10 Prompt Formulas That Always Work

Product photography: "[Product] on [surface], studio photography, clean white background, commercial photography, sharp focus --ar 1:1"

Social media header: "[Scene], wide angle, bright and airy, minimal, lifestyle photography --ar 16:9"

Blog featured image: "Abstract illustration of [concept], flat design, vibrant colors, modern, vector style --ar 16:9"

Portrait: "Professional headshot of [description], studio lighting, shallow depth of field, corporate, clean background --ar 4:5"

Character concept: "Full body character design of [description], concept art, white background, multiple views, artstation --ar 1:1"

Common Prompt Mistakes

  • Too vague: "a nice landscape" → "autumn forest path, morning mist, golden light filtering through maple trees, hiking trail"
  • Too long: Prompts over 60 words often confuse the model. Focus on key descriptors.
  • Contradictory: "minimalist and maximalist detailed" — pick one.
