Two Ways to Use Midjourney

Midjourney offers two interfaces in 2026: the Discord bot (original, full-featured) and the web app at midjourney.com (newer, more beginner-friendly). Both require a paid subscription.

Using Midjourney via the Web App (Recommended for Beginners)

The web app at midjourney.com is the easiest way to get started:

  1. Log in at midjourney.com with your Discord account
  2. Click Create in the sidebar
  3. Type your prompt in the bottom text field
  4. Click the options icon to set aspect ratio, model version, and other settings
  5. Press Enter to generate
  6. View, download, or continue editing from your image feed

The web app also shows your full image history and lets you organise work into collections.

Using Midjourney via Discord

The Discord bot is more powerful and gives access to all features:

The /imagine command: /imagine prompt: [your description] --ar 16:9 --v 6.1

After generating, you see 4 image options and a grid of buttons:

  • U1-U4: Upscale the chosen image (create a high-res version)
  • V1-V4: Create variations of that image
  • πŸ”„ (Redo): Run the same prompt again for different results

After Upscaling: Advanced Options

Once you upscale an image, you get more options:

  • Vary (Subtle): Small variations preserving composition and style
  • Vary (Strong): More dramatic variations
  • Zoom Out: Extend the image outward (expand the canvas)
  • Pan: Extend the image in a specific direction
  • Make Variations: Generate 4 new variants of this upscaled image

Essential Discord Commands

CommandFunction
/imagineGenerate images from a text prompt
/describeUpload an image and get 4 text prompts that describe it
/blendMerge 2-5 images together
/settingsSet default model version, quality, and style
/prefer option setCreate custom parameter shortcuts
/infoCheck your subscription status and GPU hours remaining
/fastSwitch to Fast GPU mode
/relaxSwitch to Relaxed mode (slower but free for Standard+)

Image Editing Features

Inpainting (Vary Region): Select a specific area of an upscaled image and regenerate only that region. Useful for fixing a face, changing an object, or adjusting a background without redoing the whole image.

Outpainting (Zoom Out): Extend the edges of an image to expand the canvas. Useful for fitting images to different aspect ratios or creating wider scenes.

Managing Your Images

All generated images are saved to your Midjourney gallery at midjourney.com/imagine. Filter by date, like, or organise into albums. All images are public by default on free/Basic plans; Pro plan and above includes Stealth Mode for private generation.
